A new Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie is coming out this summer, and you can see the irst trailer below! The Long Haul is based on another one of Jeff Kinney’s popular books, following the success of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules, and Dog Days. The film will take place one year after the events of Dog Days.
In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, a family road trip to attend Meemaw’s 90th birthday party goes hilariously off course–thanks to Greg’s newest scheme to (finally!) become famous.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul cast changes
As for the cast, its a completely new crew, especially since the last Wimpy Kid movie was made over 5 years ago. So at least you can imagine they would need new actors for all of the kids’ roles, but the parents were also replaced with new actors. Greg Heffley will now be played by Jason Drucker. In the preview, he looks a little like a younger Zachary Gordon, so his casting may work well with audiences. The Rodrick part, however, will be tough. Devon Bostick did such a great job portraying Rodrick, it will be very difficult for Charlie Wright to even come close to comparing. And, by watching this first trailer, we just don’t see it.
The parents will now be played by Tom Everett Scott and Alicia Silverstone(!). As Alicia Silverstone continues her movie-acting career comeback, by taking on this role she is only cementing herself to B-rated comedies (or worse), and it doesn’t bode well for the success of this film. Yeah, we’re sure there will be a couple of weeks of decent box office reeipts, but we can’t imagine this film will leave a lasting impression as the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Roderick Rules movies have.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is directed by David Bowers, who also directed the last 2 Wimpy Kid movies. The Long Haul will be in theaters on May 19, 2017.
